Conséquence pratique du grand principe monothéiste posé au verset 4. La certitude d'être redevable de tout à un Dieu unique oblige l'Israélite à se donner lui-même à ce Dieu avec tout ce qu'il possède de vie et de force.

Le cœur est nommé le premier ; c'est l'organe par lequel l'homme perçoit Dieu et entre en contact avec lui.

L'âme est le souffle de vie, la personnalité humaine avec la totalité de ses facultés d'intelligence, de conscience et de volonté.

La force désigne l'énergie que l'âme déploie au dehors, sous l'impulsion du cœur rempli de Dieu.

Il est impossible de s'élever à une conception de la vie religieuse plus haute et plus spirituelle que celle ici exprimée. Jésus y a vu le premier et le grand commandement de la nouvelle comme de l'ancienne alliance (Marc 12.30). Dans les citations de sa parole que nous donnent Matthieu 22.37 ; Marc 12.30 et Luc 10.27 nous trouvons, comme déjà dans la traduction des Septante, la pensée ajoutée au cœur et à l'âme ; elle est ici renfermée dans le mot d'âme.
