11 et 12 Ne pas trop attendre de la sagesse. Compter aussi avec les circonstances extérieures, indépendantes de ta volonté et dépendantes de Dieu seul.

Retour à la pensée de la dépendance de l'homme (verset 1), mais avec l'intention de prouver par des exemples et des comparaisons ce qui a été dit au commencement du morceau. Sur l'expression : Je me remis à considérer, voir 4.4, note. L'Ecclésiaste vient de faire appel à l'énergie de l'homme (verset 10). Que personne, ajoute-t-il maintenant, ne s'imagine pourtant qu'en appliquant toutes ses forces à ce qu'on fait, on soit certain de réussir ! Quelque vaillant et habile qu'on puisse être, on n'est point assuré du succès.

Ni la guerre, la victoire, ni la faveur, la vogue, l'influence qu'on exerce en se faisant aimer.

Car tous dépendent du temps et des circonstances, littéralement : Car temps et coup les rencontrent tous, c'est-à-dire : les coups qui surviennent en leur temps (3.1-8) frappent indistinctement bons et mauvais. Il faut travailler et, au besoin, courir, mais sans oublier Romains 9.16.

La réussite des hommes correspond rarement à leurs attentes. Nous pouvons user de différents moyens pour y parvenir, mais sans nous y fier aveuglément : si nous réussissons, nous devons en donner à Dieu la louange; si nous échouons, nous devons nous soumettre à Sa volonté.

Ceux qui masquent leurs soucis importants, sont « attrapés » dans le filet de Satan, dans lequel ils sont attirés avec un « appât » terrestre ; ils rejettent ou négligent alors l’appel de l'Évangile, pour se ruer vers les attraits du péché jusqu'à ce que, soudainement, ils chutent dans la ruine et la destruction.
