L'épithète ordinairement ici rendue par "parole déshonnête" signifie proprement ce qui est corrompu, pourri.

Ainsi il s'agit de tout discours qui porte en soi la corruption du péché, quel qu'en soit le sujet.

A cela l'apôtre oppose, comme devoir du chrétien, des paroles qui puissent servir à l'édification (comparez sur le sens de ce mot, Romains 15.2, note) et communiquer quelque grâce nouvelle à ceux qui les écoutent.

Selon d'autres exégètes, cette parole doit avoir pour but d'être agréable à ceux qui l'écoutent ou de leur accorder un bienfait.

Ce sens est grammaticalement possible ; mais, puisque, dans la pensée de l'apôtre, cette parole doit servir à l'édification, cela ne peut être qu'en entendant ce mot de grâce dans son sens religieux habituel.

"Un des principaux points de la piété, et des plus nécessaires, est de veiller sur sa langue ; de rendre les conversations chrétiennes ; de les remplir de discours utiles, proportionnés à la portée et aux besoins du prochain ; d'y tenir le parti de la piété avec prudence et sans rebuter." Quesnel.

Les mauvaises paroles proviennent de la corruption du cœur, de plus, elles dégradent l’esprit et la conduite de ceux qui les entendent : les chrétiens doivent prendre garde à ne pas tenir de tels discours.

Chaque enfant de Dieu a le devoir de chercher, sous le regard du Seigneur, à amener chacun à songer sérieusement à son éternité, et à l’encourager par de sains propos.

« Soyez bons les uns envers les autres », nous dit ce texte. Ceci implique la présence et la manifestation de l'amour dans le cœur, suivi d’un comportement humble et courtois. Remarquons comment le pardon divin nous pousse à pardonner nous-mêmes ! Dieu nous pardonne, alors que nous lui avons désobéi, par notre péché. Nous devons pardonner, comme Lui nous a pardonnés.

Tout mensonge, toute corruption qui éveille les mauvais désirs et les convoitises, chagrine le Saint-Esprit. Les vaines passions, celles qui produisent l'amertume, la colère, les mauvaises paroles et la malveillance, chagrinent le Saint-Esprit. Ne provoquons pas l'Esprit qui, en de tels cas, s’éloignerait de nous, nous privant ainsi de Son influence, pleine de Grâce. Le corps sera « arraché » du pouvoir de la tombe, au jour de la résurrection.

Où que puisse demeurer le Saint-Esprit, Il accorde Sa bénédiction et la sanctification ; Il est à l’origine de toutes les joies spirituelles, en particulier, quand nous bénéficions de la rédemption offerte par Christ ; si Dieu retire de nous Son Esprit, nous courrons à notre perte...
