Il s'agit ici d'esclaves en présence de leurs possesseurs ; mais cette obéissance ne doit pas être moins respectueuse lorsque les serviteurs voient des frères dans leurs maîtres. (1Timothée 6.1,2)

Ce dernier passage indique aussi le motif pour lequel l'apôtre revient si souvent sur cette obéissance des esclaves (Colossiens 3.22 ; 2.9 ; comparez 1Pierre 2.18) : c'est "afin qu'on ne blasphème point le nom de Dieu et sa doctrine," ce qui aurait eu lieu si les esclaves convertis à l'Evangile avaient montré un esprit de révolte.

Sans doute le christianisme devait nécessairement amener l'abolition de l'esclavage, mais par son influence spirituelle, du dedans au dehors, et non par la violence. (Voir l'épître à Philémon Philémon 1 et comparez 1Corinthiens 7.21, note).

Le devoir des serviteurs se résume en un mot : l’obéissance.

Les serviteurs de l'époque de Paul étaient généralement des esclaves. Les apôtres devaient apprendre aux serviteurs et à leurs maîtres, leurs devoirs respectifs, pour alléger le joug de la servitude, tant que l'esclavage ne fut éradiqué par l'influence du christianisme.

Les serviteurs doivent respecter ceux qui les dirigent. Ils doivent être loyaux, ne prétendant pas être obéissants quand ils ont l'intention de désobéir : ils doivent servir fidèlement et correctement leurs maîtres, non seulement quand ces derniers les observent, mais aussi quand ils ont « le dos tourné ».

Un regard permanent dirigé vers le Seigneur Jésus-Christ rendra les hommes fidèles et honnêtes, là où ils sont placés, non pas à contrecœur, ni par contrainte, mais par amour pour leurs maîtres et leurs intérêts. Ceci facilitera leur service, contentera leurs maîtres, et leur conduite sera approuvée par le Seigneur. Dieu récompensera même la moindre tâche faite dans le sens du devoir, en vue de Le glorifier.

Le texte nous indique ensuite quel le devoir des maîtres : « vous devez agir de la même manière ». Ayez envers vos serviteurs la même attitude que vous voudriez qu’ils aient envers vous ; manifestez pour eux de la bonne volonté et un certain égard, prenez soin que votre conduite soit approuvée par Dieu. Ne soyez pas tyranniques, ni autoritaires. Vous avez un Maître auquel vous devez obéir ; vous et vos domestiques, n’êtes que des serviteurs, au service de Christ !

Si les maîtres et les serviteurs considéraient dans une juste mesure, leurs devoirs envers Dieu, ainsi que les comptes qu'ils devront bientôt Lui rendre, ils seraient plus attentifs quant à l’exercice de leurs devoirs mutuels et les familles seraient aussi plus heureuses...
