Ce jour-là, avec sa grande épée dure et puissante, le SEIGNEUR agira contre Léviatan, le serpent fuyant, Léviatan, le serpent plein de ruse. Et il tuera ce dragon de la mer.

Esaïe 1.1-8

1 à 13 La destruction des puissances païennes et le rassemblement d'Israël.

Ce troisième discours s'ouvre par la promesse de la destruction des puissances ennemies de Dieu (verset 1) ; ce passage correspond au chapitre 24 et à 25.9-12, placés en tête des deux premières scènes. Suit un cantique qui a pour sujet la protection dont Dieu entoure sa vigne (versets 2 à 6 ; comparez 25.4-5 et 26.1-19). La prophétie se termine par la promesse du rassemblement des restes d'Israël dans la Terre-Sainte (versets 7 à 13 ; comparez 25.6-8 et la dernière partie du cantique 26.13-19).

1 La destruction des puissances païennes.

Ce jour-là : toujours le même grand jour de l'Eternel (24.21 ; 25.9).

De son épée. L'image est tirée de Deutéronome 32.41.

Léviathan : nom poétique d'un animal colossal et redoutable. La description qu'en donne le livre de Job (40.20-41.25) paraît se rapporter au crocodile ; ailleurs ce nom désigne un monstre marin ou un serpent. Esaïe distingue deux léviathans, et il y ajoute le monstre qui est dans la mer. Ces trois animaux sont les emblèmes de trois puissances politiques que l'Eternel frappera. L'Ecriture compare souvent les royaumes terrestres à des bêtes féroces (voyez Daniel). Quels sont ces trois empires ? Dans les versets 12 et 13, les exilés d'Israël doivent revenir de l'Egypte, de l'Assyrie et du pays de l'Euphrate. Il est donc probable que les trois puissances ici désignées sont Babylone, l'Assyrie et l'Egypte. Le serpent agile est sans doute l'Assyrie, traversée par le Tigre, ce fleuve au cours rapide dont le nom hébreu Hiddékel, aussi bien que le nom persan et kourde actuel (Tîr), signifie flèche. Le serpent tortueux est l'empire babylonien, situé des deux côtés de l'Euphrate, ce fleuve aux nombreuses sinuosités, naturelles et artificielles. Hérodote rapporte qu'en le descendant, on repassait trois fois tout près du même endroit. Le monstre qui est dans la mer est l'Egypte, baignée par les eaux du Nil et de la Méditerranée ; comparez Ezéchiel 29.3.

Le Seigneur Jésus, avec cette épée redoutable, qu'est la croix et par la prédication de Son évangile, détruira celui qui possède la puissance de la mort, c'est-à-dire, le diable, ce serpent ancien.

Le monde est un désert stérile et sans valeur; par contre, l'église est une « vigne », un lieu bien particulier où elle est soigneusement choyée, et où ses fruits précieux sont recueillis. Dieu la gardera pendant la « nuit » de l'affliction et de la persécution, aux jours dangereux de la tentation, comme en ceux où règnent la paix et la prospérité. Dieu prend soin également de la productivité de cette vigne.

Nous avons sans cesse besoin des « aspersions » continuelles de la Grâce divine ; si elles devaient être soudainement ôtées, nous dépéririons, et serions réduits à néant. Bien que Dieu se dresse parfois contre Son peuple, Il use de patience malgré tout, dans Sa Grâce, en vue de se réconcilier avec lui. Il est vrai, que lorsqu'Il trouve des ronces et des épines au lieu d'une vigne, Il les entasse en un lieu où elles seront alors brûlées.

Telle est, en quelques mots, la doctrine de l'évangile, par laquelle l'église doit être vivifiée à chaque instant. Depuis que le péché est entré dans le monde, il y a toujours eu, de la part de Dieu, une lutte en faveur de la sainteté, alors que l'homme, de son côté, cédait à l'impiété.

Une invitation à la Grâce divine nous est donnée. La Miséricorde et le Pardon manifestent la Puissance de notre Seigneur ; sachons bien tenir compte de cet état de fait !

Christ crucifié représente la Puissance divine. Sachons, par une foi vivante, saisir cette force spirituelle : elle s'adresse à l'indigent, à celui qui croit qu'il n'y a aucun autre Nom par lequel nous pouvons être sauvés, à l'homme qui, à la dérive et en perdition, s'accroche désespérément à une branche spirituelle. C'est le seul moyen, le plus sûr, par lequel nous pouvons être sauvés.

Dieu est toujours disposé à se réconcilier avec nous !

  16 With him is strength and wisdom. The deceived and the deceiver are his.
  
  17 He leads counselors away stripped. He makes judges fools.

  19 He leads priests away stripped, and overthrows the mighty.
  
  20 He removes the speech of those who are trusted, and takes away the understanding of the elders.
  
  21 He pours contempt on princes, and loosens the belt of the strong.
  
  22 He uncovers deep things out of darkness, and brings out to light the shadow of death.
  
  23 He increases the nations, and he destroys them. He enlarges the nations, and he leads them captive.

  10 I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, "Now the salvation, the power, and the Kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ has come; for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them before our God day and night.
  
  11 They overcame him because of the Lamb's blood, and because of the word of their testimony. They didn't love their life, even to death.
  
  12 Therefore rejoice, heavens, and you who dwell in them. Woe to the earth and to the sea, because the devil has gone down to you, having great wrath, knowing that he has but a short time."
  
  13 When the dragon saw that he was thrown down to the earth, he persecuted the woman who gave birth to the male child.
  
  14 Two wings of the great eagle were given to the woman, that she might fly into the wilderness to her place, so that she might be nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.
  
  15 The serpent spewed water out of his mouth after the woman like a river, that he might cause her to be carried away by the stream.
  
  16 The earth helped the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed up the river which the dragon spewed out of his mouth.
  
  17 The dragon grew angry with the woman, and went away to make war with the rest of her seed, who keep God's commandments and hold Jesus' testimony.
  
  Apocalypse 13
  
  1 Then I stood on the sand of the sea. I saw a beast coming up out of the sea, having ten horns and seven heads. On his horns were ten crowns, and on his heads, blasphemous names.
  
  2 The beast which I saw was like a leopard, and his feet were like those of a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of a lion. The dragon gave him his power, his throne, and great authority.
  
  4 They worshiped the dragon, because he gave his authority to the beast, and they worshiped the beast, saying, "Who is like the beast? Who is able to make war with him?"
