L'un dira : Je suis à l'Éternel, l'autre se réclamera du nom de Jacob, et l'autre écrira de sa main : Je suis à l'Éternel, et prendra le nom d'Israël.

Segond 21 L’un dira : « J’appartiens à l'Eternel », l’autre voudra porter le nom de Jacob, un autre écrira sur sa main : « Propriété de l'Eternel ! » et prendra avec fierté le nom d'Israël.

World English Bible One will say, 'I am Yahweh's;' and another will be called by the name of Jacob; and another will write with his hand 'to Yahweh,' and honor the name of Israel."

On pourrait appliquer ce verset aux Israélites, dans ce sens : il viendra un moment où tout Israël confessera joyeusement son Dieu et où le nom Israélite ne sera plus envisagé comme un opprobre ; on se glorifiera au contraire de le porter. Mais l'expression il célébrera (littéralement : nommer avec respect, prendre pour titre d'honneur) le nom d'Israel, ne convient pas bien aux Juifs, qui portent déjà ce nom et n'ont pas à le prendre. Il est donc plus naturel de rapporter ce passage aux païens, qui, voyant la gloire du peuple de Dieu (versets 3 et 4), considéreront, comme le plus grand honneur de se joindre à lui et se réclameront avec lui du nom de Jéhova ; ainsi l'opprobre d'Israël sera effacé (43.28 ; comparez 25.8). Voir 2.3 ; 19.18 ; Psaumes 87.1-7.

Prendra sur sa main la marque (le signe, le nom) de l'Eternel. Cette image exprime la joyeuse confession du nom de l'Eternel ; elle est tirée de l'usage, très répandu de nos jours encore en Orient de se tatouer. Chez les Arabes, il y a des gens qui font le métier de tatoueurs. Les païens prenaient sur le front, les bras, les mains, le signe (le nom) de leurs dieux, On se marque du chiffre de ceux qu'on aime. Comparez Exode 13.16 ; Apocalypse 13.16.
