Dans toutes leurs souffrances, ce n’est pas un messager ou un ange qui les a sauvés, mais c’est le SEIGNEUR lui-même. Dans son amour et sa pitié, il les a libérés. Il les a portés et soutenus tout au long de leur histoire.

Dans toute leur angoisse il a été en angoisse. C'est le sens qu'offre une forme du texte fort ancienne, connue déjà de saint Jérôme et admise par les docteurs Juifs et par la plupart des traducteurs modernes. Le texte actuel des manuscrits ne présente que des sens peu acceptables. Celui, qu'adopte M. Segond : Dans toutesleurs détresses, ils n'ont pas été sans secours, fausse le sens des mots. Avec la construction qu'il admet, il faut traduire :Dans toute leur angoisse, ils n'ont pas été en angoisse, ce qui n'a pas de sens. L'idée qu'exprime notre traduction est celle de l'angoisse de Dieu, qui partage toutes les souffrances de ses enfants (Psaumes 103.13). Plus l'amour est grand, plus vive devient cette souffrance de la sympathie (voir 42.14 une saisissante image pour peindre cette divine douleur). En s'exprimant, de la sorte, le prophète avait proprement en vue les angoisses de la servitude égyptienne, comme le prouve la suite du passage.

L'ange de sa face.Allusion à Exode 33.14, où Dieu dit à Moïse (qui lui demande quel est celui qu'il enverra avec Israël) : Ma face ira. L'être ainsi désigné est celui qui apparaissait aux patriarches sous le nom d'Angede l'Eternel. C'est l'agent suprême des interventions divines dans l'Ancien Testament, l'être dans lequel Dieu se rend visible aux créatures et qu'il caractérise en disant : Mon nom (la révélation de mon être) est en lui (Exode 23.21).

Soutenus : comme l'enfant faible ou fatigué ; portés : comme l'enfant malade. Exode 19.4 : Je vous ai portés sur des ailes d'aigle. Comparez Esaïe 46.3-4.
