Segond 21 Je mettrai un signe au milieu d’elles et j'enverrai plusieurs de leurs rescapés vers les autres nations – Tarsis, Pul et Lud, les peuples qui tirent à l'arc, Tubal, la Grèce et les îles lointaines, les hommes qui n'ont jamais entendu parler de moi ni vu ma gloire – et ils révéleront ma gloire parmi les nations.

Je les enverrai chez les gens de Toubal, de Yavan et au loin dans les îles, là où on n’a jamais entendu parler de moi, là où on n’a jamais vu ma gloire. World English Bible "I will set a sign among them, and I will send such as escape of them to the nations, to Tarshish, Pul, and Lud, who draw the bow, to Tubal and Javan, to the islands afar off, who have not heard my fame, neither have seen my glory; and they shall declare my glory among the nations.

Le prodige fait au milieu des peuples est l'acte par lequel Dieu anéantit leurs armées et manifeste sa gloire. Ceux qui échappent au désastre vont en porter la nouvelle et proclamer la puissance de Jéhova parmi les nations, c'est-à-dire parmi tous les habitants de la terre qui n'étaient point montés contre Jérusalem. Plusieurs entendent par les réchappés les Israélites sauvés. Ce sens est inadmissible ; au milieu d'eux se rapporte évidemment aux peuples rassemblés ; leurs ne peut se rapporter à un sujet différent. Au verset 20 ce sont les païens qui ramènent les Juifs ; pourquoi ne seraient-ce pas eux aussi qui s'en iraient par tout le monde donner le signal du retour ?

Le prophète mentionne, à titre d'exemples, quelques peuples éloignés : Tarsis, l'Espagne (2.16, note).

Pul et Lud : il faut lire plutôt Put et Lud (comme Ezéchiel 27.10 et ailleurs) ; comparez Genèse 10.6,13. Ces noms désignent deux peuples de l'Afrique, voisins de l'Egypte et habiles tireurs d'arc (Ezéchiel 30.5 ; Jérémie 46.9). Put est probablement la Lybie ; le nom paraît signifier arc et se présente dans les hiéroglyphes égyptiens sous la forme Phet.

Tubal : les Tybaréniens habitant la côte sud-est de la mer Noire, souvent nommés dans Ezéchiel.

Javan : les Grecs d'Asie (Ioniens) et d'Europe. Voir Genèse 10.2.

Les îles : l'Occident.
