Ceux qui voient ici la reprise du document élohiste, abandonné dès 1.14 appliquent cette expression à la longue durée de l'oppression israélite avant la délivrance qui va être racontée. Comparez 7.7, d'où il résulte qu'elle avait duré plus de quatre-vingts ans.
Ce verset et les suivants forment la transition au récit suivant. Le roi qui mourut ne peut être que celui qui a été mentionné 1.15, sans que l'on puisse décider sûrement si c'est le même que celui de 1.8. Cette mort parait n'avoir rien changé à l'état du peuple, qui reste là sans motif d'espérer, d'autant plus qu'il a vu disparaître depuis si longtemps celui en qui il avait pu entrevoir un libérateur.
Dieu est toujours ainsi, une Aide vraiment efficace, lors de l'épreuve. « Prend courage, toi qui est conscient de tes fautes, écrasé par le poids de tes péchés, porte tes regards vers Celui qui accorde la délivrance ». Dieu, au travers de Jésus Christ, te regarde aussi. Il joint Son Amour à la Promesse de la Rédemption.
