Un signe visible accompagnait toujours chez les anciens la conclusion d'un contrat. Quelquefois c'était un présent fait par l'une des parties contractantes (Genèse 21.27-31) ; d'autres fois c'était un monument érigé (Genèse 31.45), plus ordinairement un sacrifice sanglant (Genèse 15.9 et suivants) auquel s'ajoutait un repas commun destiné à sceller l'engagement mutuel (Genèse 26.30 ; 31.54).

La moitié du sang. Moïse partage le sang par moitié entre l'Eternel et le peuple pour servir de lien éternel entre eux et faire de ces deux parties contractantes un tout unique et inséparable. Par le fait que le sang est celui d'une victime pure, consacrée au Dieu saint, et que Dieu en reçoit la moitié, l'aspersion faite sur le peuple de l'autre moitié, recueillie dans des bassins, a une action purificatrice et fait d'Israël un peuple pardonné et consacré à Dieu.
