World English Bible Then Pharaoh also called for the wise men and the sorcerers. They also, the magicians of Egypt, did the same thing with their enchantments.

La tradition juive et, d'après elle, les Targums, le Talmud et le Nouveau Testament (2Timothée 3.8) nomment ces magiciens Jannès et Jambrès.

Le mot chartoummim, que nous traduisons par enchanteurs, est un de ces nombreux mots égyptiens qui, soit avec une légère modification, soit, comme ici, sans y rien changer, se trouvent avoir un sens en hébreu. En égyptien, il parait signifier porteur de la parole (sacrée) et en hébreu écrivain, scribe.

L'habileté des Egyptiens comme magiciens et jongleurs est attestée par les historiens anciens et confirmée par les récits des voyageurs modernes. Un de leurs tours les plus communs consiste à jouer avec des serpents venimeux et à se laisser mordre par eux. Ils réussissent aussi, en leur posant la main sur la tête (on suppose : en pressant un endroit sensible du cerveau), à les rendre immobiles et, raides comme des bâtons. Puis ils leur rendent le mouvement en les saisissant par la queue et les roulant dans leurs mains. Il est fait allusion à cet art Psaumes 58.6 ; Jérémie 8.17
