C’était avant qu’on découvre ta méchanceté. Maintenant, c’est ton tour d’être insultée par les villes d’Édom et leurs villes voisines, ainsi que par les villes des Philistins. De tous côtés, en effet, celles-ci disent qu’elles te méprisent.

Quand tu fus outragée. Le prophète ne parle pas ici des Assyriens et Babyloniens, les principaux instruments du jugement qui dévoila toute la perversité de Juda. Il nomme les petits peuples voisins qui furent les témoins des châtiments du peuple de Dieu et les aggravèrent par leur outrages ; comparez verset 41 (aux yeux de plusieurs femmes). Pour les Syriens, voir Esaïe 7.1 et suivants. Les inscriptions assyriennes nous appennent que les villes des philistins agrandissaient leur territoire aux dépens de Juda par la faveur des conquérants assyriens.
