World English Bible You were the anointed cherub who covers: and I set you, [so that] you were on the holy mountain of God; you have walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.

Le chérubin oint pour protéger. C'est la traduction la plus littérale. Le mot oint se rapporte au sacre du roi ; il devient dès ce moment pour l'Etat de Tyr et ses sanctuaires ce qu'était Adam pour le jardin d'Eden, leur gardien. La fonction des chérubins est de veiller, de garder. Comparez le chérubin gardant l'arbre de vie (Genèse 3.21) ; les chérubins étendant leurs ailes sur l'arche de l'alliance (2Rois 8.7) ; et les taureaux ailés (appelés kirubi) qui semblent veiller à la porte des temples et des palais assyriens.

Sur la sainte montagne de Dieu : comparez la note verset 2. Tyr est ici comparée à Sion, la vraie montagne de Dieu.

Au milieu des pierres de feu. On ne peut savoir certainement à quoi cette expression fait allusion. Il n'est pas question de parure, puisqu'il est dit : Tu marchais au milieu... On a voulu voir dans cette expression un emblème de la protection divine, d'après Zacharie 2.5 ; mais combien ce sens est forcé ! Le prophète ne fait-il point allusion à ces deux colonnes d'or et d'émeraude près desquelles le roi se tenait sans doute quand il présidait au culte national dans le temple d'Hercule, le dieu protecteur de Tyr ? (Voir note 26.11)
