Nous ne pouvons constater par les récits des historiens une dévastation du pays d'Egypte pareille à celle qui est ici annoncée par le prophète. Mais deux historiens, Mégasthènes et Abydénus rapportent que Nébucadnetsar fit des incursions en Lybie, au nord de l'Afrique, et parvint jusqu'aux colonnes d'Hercule (le détroit de Gibraltar) et même en Ibérie (l'Espagne). Il y a peut-être exagération dans ces rapports ; ils impliquent néanmoins la conquête de l'Egypte. Bérose dit que Nébucadnetsar régnait sur l'Egypte, la Syrie, la Phénicie et l'Arabie. Josèphe place la conquête de l'Egypte cinq ans après la prise de Jérusalem. Il ajoute que les juifs qui s'étaient réfugiés en Egypte après le meurtre de Guédalia (Jérémie chapitres 41 à 44), furent alors en partie massacrés, en partie transportés en Babylonie. Enfin deux inscriptions récemment découvertes constatent sans réplique le fait de la conquête de l'Egypte par Nébucadnetsar ; voir Jérémie 42.9, notes. Que s'est-il passé alors dans cette contrée ? Nous connaissons les traitements que les souverains assyriens et chaldéens faisaient subir aux peuples vaincus (villes détruites, contrées ravagées, populations massacrées ou déportées). Sans doute, les prêtres égyptiens, qui instruisirent les historiens grecs, se gardèrent de leur raconter les humiliations de leur patrie, ce qui explique le silence d'Hérodote sur le désastre de l'Egypte à ce moment-là. Mais ils ne lui dirent rien non plus de la défaite de Néco à Carkémis, fait que cet historien passe sous silence et dont pourtant personne ne doute. L'une des deux inscriptions dont nous venons de parler, qui provient d'un gouverneur de la Thébaïde, résidant près de Syène, dans l'île d'Eléphantine, parle de la dévastation de la Haute-Egypte, jusqu'à la première cataracte, par l'armée asiatique. Nous connaissons la déportation en Chaldée de tous les habitants de Juda par Nébucadnetsar ; les deux premiers historiens cités racontent qu'il fit transporter dans le Pont, en Asie-Mineure, des populations libyennes et ibériennes ; une expédition faite par lui en Arabie, à cette même époque, ne fut qu'une grande razzia (Maspéro). Il emmena avec lui une foule de captifs et même deux tribus entières (celles d'Hadhoura et d'Ouabar), pour les établir en Chaldée. On comprend suffisamment par ces exemples et ces indices quel dut être le sort de l'Egypte, une fois tombée entre les mains de Nébucadnetsar.
