La peine est mise en relation avec le péché. Les Lévites, par un esprit de servilité envers le peuple, s'étaient livrés à l'idolâtrie avec lui sur les hauts lieux, et même dans le temple (2Chroniques 36.14 ; comparez Ezéchiel 8.1-17). Pour leur punition, ils seront réduits au rôle de serviteurs du peuple en remplissant pour lui les offices subalternes du sanctuaire, qui incomberont désormais uniquement aux membres de la tribu de Lévi et à eux tous sans distinction (sauf l'exception du verset 15).

      6 "Bring the tribe of Levi near, and set them before Aaron the priest, that they may minister to him.
      7 They shall keep his requirements, and the requirements of the whole congregation before the Tent of Meeting, to do the service of the tabernacle.
