Je vois les gens de Kouchan se courber sous le malheur dans leurs tentes, et les gens de Madian trembler de peur dans leurs abris.
Je vois dans la détresse les tentes de Cushan ; les pavillons du pays de Madian frémissent de crainte.

Cuschan ; Madian. De même que jadis les hauts faits accomplis par l'Eternel à la tête de son peuple firent trembler les nations d'alentour (Exode 15.14-15), de même maintenant, lorsque Dieu s'avance de Théman, les peuples voisins tremblent devant lui. Cuschan (le peuple appelé, ailleurs Cusch ou Cus) désigne l'Ethiopie, ainsi le pays situé à l'occident de la mer Rouge ; et Madian, la contrée placée à l'orient de cette même mer. La mention de ces deux pays rappelle avec évidence la scène du passage de la mer Rouge par les Israélites ; ces deux noms sont également cités ici comme des exemples de la terreur qui s'emparera de tous les peuples lors de la venue du Seigneur en jugement. Cette idée apparaît, clairement dans Ezéchiel 38.18-23.

Les pavillons... ; les tentes, car les Madianites sont un peuple nomade.
