Grec : la promesse. Les faits sur lesquels l'auteur fonde (donc) son exhortation, et qu'il rappelle à la mémoire de ses lecteurs, (Hébreux 10.32-34) ne nous sont pas connus, mais on voit dès l'abord combien ce genre d'encouragement à la persévérance repose sur une profonde connaissance du cœur humain.

Toute cause pour laquelle nous avons souffert nous est chère par cela même, et l'expérience passée de la grâce de Dieu est très propre à raffermir une foi chancelante, puisqu'elle est la démonstration vivante et personnelle que cette foi n'était point une illusion.

L'auteur trouvait donc dans les souvenirs de ses lecteurs un motif d'une grande force pour les encourager à ne point rejeter loin d'eux, comme étant de peu de valeur, l'assurance qu'ils puisaient dans leur foi en Jésus, médiateur de la nouvelle Alliance, (Hébreux 10.19) mais à faire preuve de cette persévérance qui devait leur permettre de remporter la grande récompense promise. (Hébreux 3.6 ; 6.12 ; 1Pierre 5.4 ; Luc 21.19 ; Matthieu 5.12)
