Chapitre 12.

1 à 11 La course persévérante du croyant qui, les regards sur Jésus, endure les épreuves.

Grec : Ayant, placée autour de nous une si grande nuée de témoins.

Il s'agit ici des témoins de la foi que l'auteur a rappelés dans le chapitre précédent, et de tant d'autres encore qui ont glorifié Dieu par leur constance dans les épreuves. Ils sont une grande nuée, une multitude, quoique, à chaque époque, le peuple de Dieu peu nombreux.

Cette pensée est fort encourageante, (comparez Apocalypse 7.9) et c'est en effet pour affermir ses frères dans leur foi que l'auteur leur rappelle ce fait. Veut-il dire que ces témoins nous entourent réellement de leur présence invisible et sont les spectateurs de notre course ? La comparaison de la vie chrétienne avec la course dans le stade donne à le penser.

Grec : Courons avec persévérance la course (la lutte à la course) placée devant nous. (Comparer Hébreux 10.36)

On retrouve ici l'image favorite de l'apôtre Paul, la vie chrétienne représentes comme une de ces courses dans le stade auxquelles les Grecs se livraient avec passion dans leurs jeux publics. (Comparer 1Corinthiens 9.24,25, note ; Philippiens 3.14., note, 1Timothée 6.12 ; 2Timothée 4.7)

Une "nuée de témoins" entourait alors les concurrents et les encourageait de ses applaudissements. Pour le chrétien, ce sont tous ceux qui ont déjà combattu et vaincu. Ceux qui couraient dans la lice avaient grand soin de se débarrasser de tout fardeau qui aurait pu entraver la vitesse de leur course.

Que de choses, même permises, que d'attachements, que de soucis, même légitimes, peuvent devenir pour le croyant une entrave ! Mais il est une chose qui arrêterait absolument sa course, et que l'auteur nomme sans figure : c'est le péché.

L'épithète appliquée au péché et qu'on peut rendre par ces mots : qui enveloppe (ou circonvient) aisément, ne se trouve qu'ici. L'image qu'elle renferme a été entendue soit de gens qui entourent le coureur et l'arrêtent dans sa course, soit d'un vêtement flottant qui gêne sa marche. Cette dernière comparaison est la plus naturelle et la plus généralement admise aujourd'hui. Telle est l'action du péché s'il n'est absolument rejeté ! (Romains 7.21)

L'obéissance et la persévérance dans la foi en Christ, voilà « la course » que devaient effectuer les Hébreux, course par laquelle il est possible de gagner la « couronne de gloire », ou la misère éternelle, en cas d’échec ; cette course nous concerne également.

Dans l’expression, « le péché qui nous enveloppe si facilement », (premier verset de ce texte), nous devons comprendre : un péché auquel beaucoup d'entre nous sont prompts à succomber, ou à celui auquel nous sommes le plus exposés, que ce soit par habitude, par notre âge, ou suivant les circonstances. Ce texte nous adresse une exhortation très importante : tant qu’un péché reste enraciné dans le cœur d’un homme, sans être combattu ni subjugué, il empêchera celui-ci de « courir » dans sa course spirituelle chrétienne, en lui ôtant toute motivation pour vaincre, et en laissant place à tout découragement.

Que ceux qui sont fatigués et faibles spirituellement, puissent se rappeler que Jésus, Celui qui est Saint, a souffert, pour les sauver de la ruine éternelle. Si de telles personnes portaient vraiment leur regard par Jésus, elles seraient fortifiées spirituellement, en toute sainteté, elles seraient gardées de toute chute provoquée leurs désirs charnels.

Recherchons le plus fréquemment possible la présence de Jésus. Que sont nos petites épreuves par rapport à Son agonie à la croix ? Que sont nos « déserts spirituels », face à Ses souffrances ? Que représentent nos peines par rapport à celles de beaucoup d'autres personnes ? On rencontre parfois chez les croyants une tendance à défaillir dans leurs faiblesses, à succomber facilement sous les épreuves et les afflictions ; ceci est dû à l'imperfection de la grâce qui est en leur cœur et aux restes de la corruption qui subsistent en eux.

Les chrétiens ne doivent pas faiblir, face à l’épreuve. Bien que leurs ennemis et leurs persécuteurs puissent leur infliger de dures souffrances, il s'agit cependant de châtiments que Dieu permet de leur voir supporter ; leur Père céleste « supervise » tout, et Sa Sagesse aura réponse à tout. Face à leurs afflictions, ces âmes ne doivent pas faillir, ni perdre courage, car elles demeurent, malgré leurs péchés, dans « la main de Dieu et sous Sa houlette ». Elles ne doivent pas se décourager ni « crouler » sous les épreuves, ni se tourmenter, mais doivent les supporter, avec foi et patience.

Dieu peut permettre aux impies de rester dans l’iniquité, mais Il corrigera le péché de Ses propres enfants. En tant que tel, Il agit comme un Père. Nos parents ici-bas peuvent parfois nous châtier pour satisfaire un sentiment personnel plutôt que pour réformer nos manières. Mais notre Père céleste ne veut jamais nous faire souffrir par plaisir, ni affliger en vain Ses enfants : Il le fait toujours pour notre bien.

Notre vie entière est en quelque sorte un long apprentissage, il reste bien imparfait quant à notre exercice spirituel ; à cause de notre état pécheur, nous devons donc nous soumettre à la discipline céleste. Quand nous serons parvenus à la perfection, nous serons alors complètement réconciliés avec le ciel et le châtiment que Dieu peut parfois nous faire encore endurer, disparaîtra. Le châtiment de Dieu n'est pas synonyme de condamnation ; il peut être supporté avec patience, pour nous conduire vers une sainteté croissante.

Apprenons bien à considérer les afflictions que nous supportons ici-bas ; si elles semblent provenir des hommes, elles sont en fait des corrections envoyées par notre Père, plein de Grâce et de Sagesse, pour notre bien spirituel !
