Jésus repousse d'abord, en s'appuyant sur un passage de l'Ecriture, l'accusation de blasphème portée contre lui, (versets 34-36) puis il prouve, par ses œuvres, son unité essentielle avec Dieu qu'il a déclarée à (Jean 10.30 ; Jean 10.37,38)

- On lit dès les premiers mots de ce Psaumes 82 "Dieu se tient dans l'assemblée de Dieu il juge au milieu des dieux," c'està-dire au milieu des chefs de la théocratie, qui y exerçaient au nom de Dieu les fonctions de juge et qui ainsi étaient ses représentants au milieu du peuple.

Malgré cela, Dieu leur adresse ses reproches les plus sévères sur les prévarications et les injustices dont ils se rendaient coupables puis il ajoute : (verset 6) "J'avais dit : Vous êtes des dieux, vous êtes tous des fils du Très-Haut. Cependant vous mourrez comme des hommes, vous tomberez comme un prince quelconque." (Trad. Segond.)

On voit qu'il s'agit ici de personnages auxquels la Parole de Dieu (la parole même de ce Psaume) est adressée pour les reprendre de leurs iniquités et leur annoncer le châtiment qu'ils s'étaient attiré en souillant leur charge sacrée. On voit encore que tout ce que Jésus veut constater dans ce Psaume, c'est que, dans l'Ecriture, le nom de dieu est attribué à des hommes mortels, à cause de la charge dont ils sont revêtus, sans que pour cela cette Ecriture blasphème, car elle reste vraie et sainte, elle ne peut être abolie ou annulée. (Comparer Matthieu 5.17)

Or, à ces hommes mortels et coupables, qui reçoivent pourtant le titre de dieux, Jésus oppose, non sans quelque ironie Celui que le Père a sanctifié et envoyé dans le monde.

Ce dernier mot implique la préexistence de Christ, car Dieu l'a sanctifié d'abord, mis à part pour sa mission, rempli de l'EspritSaint sans mesure, pour l'œuvre qu'il avait à faire, puis il l'a envoyé dans le monde.

On ne peut, sans renverser arbitrairement l'ordre des termes, appliquer l'expression : il l'a sanctifié, à la naissance miraculeuse ou au baptême, ces faits étant postérieurs a l'envoi du Fils dans le monde.

Elle ne peut désigner que "l'ordre" (verset 18) reçu avant l'incarnation. (1Pierre 1.20) Sanctifié et envoyé par le Père, il est le Saint et le Juste, le Sauveur du monde. (Comparer Jean 6.27,Romains 1.4)

Est ce qu'il blasphème quand il s'appelle Fils de Dieu ? Ce titre de Fils de Dieu est choisi à dessein, il exprime exactement et pleinement la pensée du verset 30, d'ou les adversaires avaient tiré cette conclusion : "Tu te fais Dieu et tu blasphèmes." (verset 33) Jésus, au lieu d'affirmer à nouveau son égalité avec Dieu, accentue dans sa réponse sa subordination au Père : Je suis Fils de Dieu.

- On pourrait objecter (et l'on n'a pas manqué de le faire), que Jésus, par sa citation, a prouvé seulement qu'il pouvait, sans blasphème, bien qu'étant homme, s'attribuer le titre de dieu, mais qu'il n'a point justifié l'affirmation, qui scandalisait surtout ses adversaires, de sa divinité effective, quand il déclarait que "lui et le Père étaient un." (verset 30)

En parlant ainsi, il se disait Dieu dans un sens différent de celui que ce titre comportait quand il était appliqué par le psalmiste aux juges théocratiques.

Plusieurs interprètes en ont conclu que Jésus, en s'appelant Fils de Dieu, s'attribuait seulement la plus haute des fonctions théocratiques, le rôle de Messie. Mais ainsi comprise, sa pensée serait en contradiction avec mainte autre déclaration celle du verset 30 notamment, qui implique, nous l'avons vu, l'unité substantielle du Fils avec le Père.

Pour saisir le raisonnement de Jésus, il faut remarquer la gradation qu'il y a cotre les verset 35 et 36 : "Si l'Ecriture n'a pas blasphémé en appelant dieux les personnes à qui est adressée la révélation, comment aurais je blasphémé en me déclarant Dieu, moi que Dieu envoie au monde comme sa révélation elle-même ?,"

M. Godet, qui relève cette gradation, ajoute une réflexion qui met ce passage dans sa vraie lumière : "Le monothéisme biblique diffère absolument du froid et mort déisme que l'orthodoxie juive avait extrait des livres saints et qui sépare par un abîme le Créateur et l'homme. Toute fonction théocratique exercée au nom de Jéhova, qui l'a conférée, met son dépositaire en relation vivante avec le TrèsHaut, le fait participer à son souffle et le constitue son agent. Par là cet homme, roi, juge ou prophète, devient relativement une manifestation de Dieu même. (Zacharie 12.3) L'Ancien Testament est par sa tendance la plus profonde en marche constante vers l'incarnation, couronnement de ce rapprochement constant entre Dieu et l'homme. Voilà le vrai fond de l'argumentation de Jésus : si ce courant tout entier n'a rien de blasphématoire, le terme auquel il aboutit, l'apparition d'un homme qui se dit un avec Dieu, n'a rien en soi d'attentatoire à la majesté de Dieu."
