Le pressentiment de sa mort terrible et si prochaine (maintenant) fait éprouver à Jésus une émotion profonde ; son âme, ce siège intime de la vie et des affections son âme en est troublée.

Il le dit avec candeur, comme plus tard il fera de ses disciples bien-aimés les confidents de son angoisse. (Matthieu 26.38) Il sent le besoin de prier ; mais, pressé entre le sentiment de sa haute vocation et le désir de la délivrance, il hésite sur ce qu'il demandera à Dieu : Que dirai-je ?

Lutte redoutable, observe Bengel, entre l'horreur de la mort et l'ardeur de l'obéissance. Le cri de la nature s'échappe de son âme en cette ardente supplication : Père, sauve-moi de cette heure !

Bientôt en Gethsémané retentira cette même requête : "Père ! que cette coupe passe loin de moi !," Mais, dans cette lutte suprême, il ajoutera aussitôt, avec un abandon absolu à la volonté de Dieu : "Non comme je veux, mais comme tu veux."

De même ici, il reprend pour ainsi dire sa prière par ces mots d'une sainte résignation : mais c'est pour cette heure même que je suis venu. Et des lors toute son âme s'élève victorieuse vers ce but suprême de son sacrifice : Père, glorifie ton nom !

Ce nom, expression de toutes les perfections divines, sera, en effet, glorifié par la rédemption du monde. Ainsi les scènes mystérieuses de Gethsémané sont le vrai commentaire de ce douloureux moment de la vie du Sauveur, et ce fait nous explique peut-être pourquoi Jean ne les a pas racontées dans son évangile.

- La plupart des interprètes objectent à l'interprétation que nous donnons des mots : Père, sauve-moi de cette heure, que si Jésus avait vraiment voulu demander à son Père de le dispenser de mourir, il aurait ajouté, comme en Gethsémané : "S'il est possible."

Les uns pensent que sa requête signifie : Fais moi sortir victorieux de la lutte intérieure actuelle.

D'autres, en plus grand nombre en font une question et traduisent : Dirai-je : Père, sauve-moi de cette heure ?

Les premiers nous paraissent méconnaître que "cette heure," dont Jésus demande à Dieu de le "sauver," ne saurait être que l'heure de sa mort, et aux seconds, nous dirons, avec Meyer, qu'ils font d'une ardente prière une simple réflexion incompatible avec une telle situation. Non, quand Jésus souffrant s'adresse à son Père, il ne spécule pas, il prie. Que si l'on craint de trouver dans cette parole entendue comme une prière, une contradiction trop directe avec cette expression d'une entière résignation : mais c'est pour cette heure que je suis venu, nous répondrons que cette contradiction est dans les choses, disons mieux, dans le fond de l'âme de Jésus, où se livre une lutte terrible entre la nature humaine vraiment humaine, et l'amour divin qui se dévoue.

Enfin, au lieu de cette traduction : mais c'est pour cette heure même que je suis venu (grec mais c'est à cause de cela que je suis venu pour cette heure, ou jusqu'à cette heure), on a proposé d'interpréter : c'est à cause de cela à cause des souffrances et de la mort que je dois subir, que j'ai persévéré dans la voie où j'ai marché jusqu'à présent.

Mais l'expression cette heure ne saurait avoir un autre sens qu'au commencement du verset et au verset 23 (2e note). Elle désigne le moment suprême de la mort, et, par conséquent, les mots : pour cette heure même ne sont qu'une apposition explicative de la locution : à cause de cela.

La particule donc indique que cette voix du ciel et les paroles qu'elle prononce sont une réponse à la prière de Jésus : "Glorifie ton nom !" Je l'ai glorifié, mon nom, dans toute l'apparition de mon Fils sur la terre, dans sa parfaite obéissance, dans ses œuvres de puissance, dans la sainteté de sa vie ; et je le glorifierai encore (grec de nouveau) : Dieu le glorifiera en soutenant le Sauveur sur la croix, en le ressuscitant, en l'exaltant à sa droite, et enfin en consommant son œuvre au moyen du Saint-Esprit à travers tous les siècles et jusque dans l'éternité. Ainsi se conclut l'alliance de grâce, en ce que le Fils s'offre en sacrifice à son Père, et que le Père accepte solennellement devant tout le peuple ce sacrifice volontaire, dernier degré du dévouement et de l'amour. C'est la troisième fois que, selon nos évangiles, cette voix du ciel rend un témoignage solennel au Fils bien-aimé de Dieu. (Matthieu 3.17 ; 17.5)
