Dans cette tristesse de la séparation, Jésus fait à ses disciples, comme première compensation de son absence, un don infiniment précieux : l'amour fraternel.

Il est vrai qu'il s'agit d'un commandement ; mais c'est un commandement qu'il se charge lui-même d'accomplir dans leur cœur et dans leur vie. C'est même en cela qu'il est nouveau.

Ce mot a singulièrement occupé les exégètes. Comment, ont ils demandé, ce commandement de l'amour mutuel peut-il être nouveau, puisqu'il se trouve déjà dans l'Ancien Testament (Lévitique 19.18) et que Jésus lui-même le cite comme étant l'âme de la loi ? (Matthieu 22.39) Et ils ont répondu : Il est nouveau parce qu'il renferme tous les autres commandements de la loi (Luther), parce que Jésus l'a renouvelé (Calvin), parce qu'il renouvelle l'homme (Augustin), parce qu'il est toujours nouveau (Olshausen), parce qu'il est le principe d'une vie nouvelle (de Wette), parce qu'il établit la différence qu'il y a entre l'amour fraternel (les uns les autres) et la charité pour le prochain. (Grotius et d'autres.)

Il y a du vrai dans toutes ces interprétations ; mais il est plus vrai encore de dire que ce commandement est nouveau dans son essence, parce que Jésus luimême l'accomplit dans le cœur de ses disciples par l'amour dont il les a aimés.

Cet amour "part d'un centre de vie et d'affection nouveau...Jésus a apporté dans le monde et témoigné aux siens un amour spécifiquement différent de tout amour qui avait paru jusqu'alors, celui qui s'attache à la personnalité humaine pour la sauver. De ce foyer tout nouveau jaillit la flamme d'une affection essentiellement différente de tout ce que le monde avait connu auparavant sous ce nom. En Christ, voilà l'explication du mot nouveau" Godet. C'est évidemment là ce que Jésus a voulu dire en ajoutant dans la seconde partie de ce verset : que comme je vous ai aimés, vous vous aimiez aussi les uns les autres.

L'amour de Jésus ne donne pas seulement la mesure mais la nature et le caractère du véritable amour mutuel de ses disciples. Le verset suivant montre l'importance suprême que Jésus attache à cet amour. Aussi y insiste-t-il à diverses reprises. (Jean 15 ; 12,17) Et nul ne l'a mieux senti que notre évangéliste. (1Jean 2.7,8 ; 3.11 ; 4.20,21)
