World English Bible Most certainly I tell you, that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into joy.

Jésus connut, par cette pénétration divine dont sa vie nous donne tant d'exemples, (comparez Jean 2.24,25) que ses disciples voulaient l'interroger.

Il les prévint en exprimant la question qui les arrêtait ; mais, au lieu de dérouler à leurs regards les événements prochains qui auraient expliqué sa parole du verset 16, il se contente de leur dire quelles impressions profondes ces événements feront sur eux.

Durant les jours ténébreux de sa mort, ils pleureront, ils se lamenteront, tandis que le monde, s'imaginant avoir triomphé de la vérité et de la justice dont Christ était le témoin, se réjouira.

Mais bientôt, au jour de la résurrection et surtout au jour de l'effusion de l'Esprit, toute leur tristesse sera changée en une joie d'autant plus grande, et que nul ne pourra leur ravir. (verset 22)
