"Ce qu'il y a de plus personnel dans les manifestations humaines, c'est le son de la voix ; c'est par ce moyen que Jésus se fait connaître à Marie. L'accent que prend, dans sa bouche, ce nom de Marie, exprime tout ce qu'elle est pour lui, tout ce qu'il est pour elle." Godet.

Aussi est ce avec un tressaillement de joie que Marie, à son tour, pousse cette exclamation dans laquelle elle met toute son âme : Rabbouni ! Maître ! Elle ne peut en dire davantage.

Ce seul mot, prononcé dans une telle situation, a paru si important à l'évangéliste, qu'il l'a conservé dans la langue originale, et il remarque expressément pour ses lecteurs grecs qu'il le cite en hébreu.

Ce dernier mot, omis par le texte reçu, est sûrement authentique. Il se lit dans Sin., B, D, Itala, versions syriaques.
