Les paroles adressées au roi et à la reine s'étendent, selon nous, jusqu'à la fin du verset 22.

La reine : la reine-mère, qui, dans les cours de l'Orient où règne la polygamie, a toujours joué un rôle prépondérant. Dans le livre des Rois, la reine-mère est nommée à l'occasion de chaque avènement, sauf deux fois. Il n'est pas possible de mettre des noms propres sous les indications de notre texte. Nous savons seulement que la mère du roi Jéhojachin (Jéchonias) fut emmenée à Babylone avec son fils (2Rois 24.12,15). Si les menaces des versets 18 à 22 se rapportent à elle, elles se sont sans doute accomplies à la lettre.

Voici un message envoyé au Roi Jojakim, et à sa reine : leurs afflictions allaient être sévères. Ils demandèrent donc : « Ces douleurs vont-elles réellement fondre sur nous » ? Il fallait bien le leur faire savoir, à cause de leur obstination à suivre les voies du péché.

Nous ne pouvons pas changer la couleur naturelle de notre peau ; il était de même moralement impossible de reprendre et de réformer ce peuple. Le péché est la noirceur de l'âme ; il la « défigure » ; nous sommes « déformés » par sa présence, de sorte qu'il nous est impossible de nous en débarrasser par nos propres forces. Mais la Grâce toute-puissante peut changer la « peau de l'Éthiopien », (Verset Jérémie 13:23*)!

Aucune dépravation naturelle, ni habitude effrénée du péché, ne peuvent être un obstacle à la Puissance divine : nous sommes nouvellement créés, en Esprit !

L'Éternel demande à Jérusalem, si elle est désireuse d'être « délivrée » de son péché. Si un esclave de l'iniquité estime qu'il pourrait facilement changer sa nature dépravée, comme pourrait le faire quelqu'un doté d'une forte personnalité, il se fourvoie désespérément ; ce qui est impossible aux hommes, est toutefois possible à Dieu !

Recherchons donc l'aide de Celui qui est tout Puissant pour assurer le salut !
