8 à 22 L'affranchissement des Hébreux :

Rien ne prouve mieux que le fait raconté dans ce chapitre l'état de démoralisation incurable où le peuple était plongé. Ils ont pris devant Dieu dans le temple, d'un commun accord, l'engagement d'affranchir leurs esclaves juifs ; croyant le danger d'une ruine imminente conjuré par l'arrivée de l'armée égyptienne, accourue à leur secours, et par la levée du siège, ils se hâtent d'annuler les effets de la mesure qu'ils avaient prise au moment de la détresse. Ils n'avaient donc offert à Dieu qu'un sacrifice égoïste et intéressé. Leur intention n'avait pas été de revenir à l'accomplissement fidèle de la loi, mais de se rendre Dieu favorable et peut-être d'augmenter le nombre des défenseurs de la place.

D’après la loi dictée par l’Éternel, un juif ne devait pas être gardé plus de sept ans, en servitude. Cet ordre divin fut transgressé par les Juifs, à l’époque de Jérémie, ainsi que par leurs ancêtres. Quand une lueur d’espoir fut perceptible, quant à la levée du siège de Jérusalem, les enfants d’Israël forcèrent leurs domestiques à rester encore à leur service.

Ceux qui pensent pouvoir tromper Dieu, par un pseudo repentir et un changement de conduite simulé, rendent leur âme coupable de la plus grande fraude qui soit.

Ce texte montre bien la liberté qui existe à pratiquer le péché, liberté qui mène finalement aux jugements célestes les plus sévères. Quand nous décevons Dieu, dans l’exercice de notre devoir, il est tout à fait normal que nous soyons déçus en retour, quant à l’espérance d’obtenir Sa Miséricorde. Quand nous sommes contraints, dans l’angoisse, de changer de conduite, ce changement est rarement durable.

Les vœux solennels que firent les enfants d’Israël envers l’Éternel, ne furent pas respectés, profanant ainsi la loi divine : ce qui les sépara encore davantage de Dieu.

Sondons notre cœur, afin de vérifier l’authenticité de notre repentir ; veillons à ce que la loi divine dirige toujours notre conduite !
