La ville de Gaza est comparée à une femme qui s'est arraché ou plutôt rasé les cheveux en signe de deuil.

Askalon, ville maritime autre place forte de Philistie ; elle est muette de consternation.

Restes des Anakim. Le texte porte : restes des vallées ; nous préférons lire avec les LXX restes des Anakim (en corrigeant une seule lettre). Les Anakim étaient les derniers représentants des habitants primitifs, Avviens ou Réphaïm, qui avaient été dépossédés par les Philistins et qui, d'après Josué 11.22, s'étaient réfugiés à Gaza, Gath et Asdod. Ils étaient de taille gigantesque.

Vous mutilerez-vous ? Ces mutilations ou incisions accompagnaient les prières instantes des païens à leurs divinités, comme on le voit 1Rois 18.28 ; la loi interdisait cet usage aux Juifs (Lévitique 19.28 ; Deutéronome 14.1, etc.).
