A Damas. Depuis la destruction du royaume de Syrie par Tiglath-Piléser (2Rois 16.9 ; comparez Esaïe 17.1-3, notes), nous ne savons plus rien de l'histoire de ce pays. Il est probable que Pharaon Néco s'en empara après la bataille de Méguiddo. Ribla, son quartier général était en Syrie (2Rois 23.33). Damas semble avoir recouvré une indépendance momentanée après la défaite de Néco à Carkémis. Mais Jérémie lui annonce qu'elle n'échappera pas à Nébucadnetsar. Les Syriens sont mentionnés parmi les troupes auxiliaires des Chaldéens, Jérémie 35.11 et 2Rois 24.2.

Une mauvaise nouvelle : celle de l'approche du conquérant babylonien ; elles apprennent les premières, en raison de leur situation septentrionale.

« Damas est devenue lâche ». C'était une ville joyeuse, possédant tous les plaisirs que l’on puisse trouver ici-bas. Ceux qui trouvent leur bonheur dans des joies charnelles et peu recommandables de ce monde, s’égarent totalement.
