10 à 19 L'hippopotame.

Voici l'hippopotame. D'après ce qui suit, c'est bien ainsi, et non par éléphant, qu'il faut rendre le mot hébreu behémoth, pluriel intensif de behéma : bétail : l'animal colossal. Mais en même temps, le mot de behémoth ressemble au nom égyptien de l'hippopotame : P-éhé-moû : le bœuf d'eau, en italien bomarino.

Que j'ai fait en même temps que toi. Il n'est pas le représentant d'une autre création que celle à laquelle tu dois toi-même la vie. D'autres entendent : que j'ai fait pour vivre à tes côtés, et non pas au fond des déserts ou sur des monts inaccessibles ; ou bien encore : que j'ai fait aussi bien que toi.

Il mange de l'herbe (versets 14 et 15), bien que vivant dans l'eau. Il n'est pas carnassier, et cependant qu'il est redoutable !
