5.13 Ă  13.33 La conquĂȘte.

La conquĂȘte se concentre dans trois grands actes, spĂ©cialement importants au point de vue stratĂ©gique :

  1. la prise de JĂ©richo, la premiĂšre grande ville forte, et celle d'Aï ; JosuĂ© peut hardiment pĂ©nĂ©trer aprĂšs cela au cƓur du pays
  2. la victoire remportée à Gabaon sur la coalition des rois du midi
  3. la victoire remportée prÚs du lac Mérom sur la confédération des rois du nord.
Entre ces trois grands morceaux viennent s'intercaler des faits explicatifs sans importance militaire.

5.13 Ă  6.5 Apparition de l'ange de l'Eternel.

AprÚs avoir menacé Israël de ne lui donner pour conducteur qu'un ange de dignité inférieure, Dieu, à la priÚre de Moise, avait consenti à ce que sa face marchùt avec lui, c'est-à-dire l'Ange de sa face, si fréquemment identifié avec l'Eternel (voir Exode, chapitre 33, note). C'était cet ange qui, d'aprÚs 1Corinthiens 10.3, habitant dans la nuée, avait accompagné Israël dans le désert ; et c'est lui qui, maintenant qu'Israël entre en guerre avec les Cananéens, apparaßt à Josué sous la forme d'un chef d'armée.

Jusqu'à présent, nous n'avions pas vu d'apparition de la Gloire divine, face à Josué. On peut remarquer, dans ce passage, que cette derniÚre se manifesta sous une forme humaine. Cet Homme était le Fils de Dieu, la Parole éternelle.

JosuĂ© Lui rendit tous les honneurs qui Lui Ă©taient dus : l'apparition divine, le Seigneur, reçut d'ailleurs ces honneurs, ce que n'aurait pas acceptĂ© un ange, JosuĂ© 6:2. L'Éternel apparut Ă  Abraham, sous la forme d'un voyageur ; pour JosuĂ© par contre, cette apparition avait l'apparence d'un homme de guerre. Christ se rĂ©vĂšle Ă  Son peuple, IsraĂ«l, pour affermir sa foi. Christ avait son Ă©pĂ©e tirĂ©e du fourreau, ce qui encourageait JosuĂ© Ă  poursuivre la guerre avec vigueur. Cette Ă©pĂ©e Ă©tait dans Sa main : cela dĂ©note qu'elle Ă©tait prĂȘte Ă  dĂ©fendre et Ă  sauver les HĂ©breux, dans tous les combats qu'ils allaient mener. Par cette Ă©pĂ©e, le patriarche savait maintenant si cette apparition venait en amie ou en ennemi.

Le choix entre les Israélites et les Cananéens, entre Christ et Beelzébul, ne pouvait tolérer qu'Israël soit partisan des deux camps à la fois, comme cela se rencontre parfois, ici-bas. Josué montre un vif désir de connaßtre la volonté de Christ.

Tous les véritables chrétiens doivent se battre sous la banniÚre de Christ, en étant des conquérants soutenus par Sa présence !
