World English Bible Then all the children of Israel, and all the people, went up, and came to Bethel, and wept, and sat there before Yahweh, and fasted that day until evening; and they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before Yahweh.

26 à 48 Défaite de Benjamin.

Ce n'est qu'après sa double défaite que le peuple s'humilie réellement devant l'Eternel. A côté d'une indignation et d'un empressement louables, il y avait eu dans son fait beaucoup de légèreté et de présomption. Il ne s'était pas humilié avant de se faire l'instrument de la justice et de la sainteté divines. Dieu ne le rendra vainqueur que quand il aura demandé le pardon de ses propres fautes et cherché en lui sa force. Le verset 23 montrait un certain progrès comparativement au verset 18. Notre verset 26 indique un deuil plus général (tout le peuple) et plus profond encore (jeûnes et sacrifices).
