Le repos et la sainte convocation n'avaient pas lieu dans les autres fêtes de nouvelles lunes qui n'étaient signalées que par le son des trompettes et un double holocauste. La raison de cette différence est que cette nouvelle lune ouvrait le 7ième mois dans le cours duquel se célébraient le grand jour des Expiations et la fête des Tabernacles. Cette double circonstance donnait au septième mois tout entier un caractère très solennel et en quelque sorte très sabbatique. De là la solennité spéciale qui s'attache au premier jour de ce mois. Après l'exil et surtout depuis l'époque des Séleucides, les Juifs célébrèrent ce premier jour du septième mois comme leur nouvel an, le commencement de l'année civile  ; mais ici rien de pareil n'est indiqué et Exode 12.2 s'oppose à une telle supputation.

Fanfare : il s'agit d'un cor en forme de corne de bélier, et non des trompettes d'argent, avec lesquelles on donnait divers signaux (Nombres 10.2,9) et qui annonçaient les nouvelles lunes ordinaires (10.10).

Un rappel : rappelant au peuple le commencement de la fête. Il est remarquable que Nombres 28.11 indique pour les nouvelles lunes ordinaires un sacrifice plus grand (deux veaux) que Nombres 29.2 ne le fait pour la nouvelle lune si solennelle du septième mois. Mais il faut admettre que ce sacrifice d'un veau est en sus du sacrifice régulier de deux veaux, comme celui-ci était en sus de l'holocauste journalier d'un agneau.
