voici alors ce que je vous ferai : j'enverrai sur vous la terreur, le dépérissement et la fièvre qui épuisent le regard et rongent la vie. Vous sèmerez vos semences pour rien : ce sont vos ennemis qui les mangeront.

Maux effrayants, littéralement : l'effroi.

Cette expression ne se retrouve pas dans le Pentateuque, mais bien dans les prophètes. Deux causes de cet effroi : la maladie et des guerres malheureuses. La maladie, sous les deux formes de la langueur ou de la fièvre ; la guerre, sous trois formes : celle d'incursions et d'invasions passagères, razzias après lesquelles l'ennemi s'en retourne chargé de butin ; Puis celle des batailles rangées et perdues ; enfin celle de l'assujettissement complet à l'ennemi, suivi d'un découragement tel qu'on ne songe plus même à résister (Juges 6.3)
