Ainsi le renoncement absolu que Jésus vient de prescrire ne suffit pas pour faire d'un homme son disciple ; il n'y a pas seulement des affections et des biens à sacrifier, il y a des souffrances à endurer dans cet esprit d'obéissance et d'amour dont Jésus lui-même était animé, et dont il devait donner l'exemple jusqu'à son dernier soupir.
Ces souffrances ont pour emblème l'instrument qui servira au supplice du Maître. Comme le Maître, chaque disciple a sa propre croix, qu'il doit porter en le suivant. Or, la croix est toujours et pour tous un instrument d'ignominie, de souffrance et de mort.
