Ce court dialogue est particulier à Luc.

Mais Matthieu (Matthieu 21.15,16) mentionne, après l'entrée de Jésus à Jérusalem, un semblable mouvement d'indignation parmi les pharisiens.

Ici, quelques-uns de ces hommes, orgueilleux de leur position et jaloux de leur influence sur le peuple, se montrent irrités des acclamations et des louanges dont Jésus est l'objet, et ils lui demandent de reprendre ses disciples, afin de leur imposer silence.

Quelle note discordante au sein de ce joyeux concert ! La réponse de Jésus est revêtue d'une image proverbiale qui signifie : Il est désormais impossible de comprimer cet élan de louanges, de reconnaissance et d'amour, qui s'élèvera de la terre au ciel.

Ce contraste entre la pierre et l'homme se retrouve dans une autre application, Luc 3.8. (Comparer Habakuk 2.11)
