Seigneur, lui dirent-ils, voilà justement deux épées. — C’est suffisant, leur répondit-il.
Et ils dirent : Seigneur, voici deux épées. Et il leur dit : Cela suffit.

Dans leur naïve ignorance, les disciples produisent deux épées, dont ils s'étaient pourvus en prévision des dangers qui les attendaient durant la nuit ; et Jésus, avec une douloureuse ironie, leur dit : Cela suffit !

On a prétendu que cette dernière parole ne renfermait aucune allusion aux deux épées ; qu'elle avait ce sens : Assez de ces pensées auxquelles vous n'entendez rien, n'en parlons plus. Mais il est plus naturel d'admettre que Jésus a voulu dire : Ces deux épées sont plus que suffisantes, puisque ce n'est pas avec des armes de ce genre que vous défendrez la vérité et établirez mon règne dans le monde !
