Luc 23.43

Jésus accorde à ce pécheur sauvé bien plus qu'il n'avait demandé. Non pas un simple souvenir dans un avenir plus ou moins lointain ; mais aujourd'hui, lui dit il, avant que la nuit règne sur la terre, je t'introduirai dans le séjour des bienheureux, où tu seras avec moi.

Jésus promettait cette suprême consolation à ses propres disciples attristés au moment de la séparation. (Jean 14.3 ; comparez 17 : 24.)

C'est dépouiller cette magnifique promesse de sa richesse et de sa beauté que de faire du paradis une partie du hadès (lieu invisible, séjour des morts) où l'esprit de Jésus se serait rendu dans sa prétendue descente aux enfers, pendant l'intervalle qui sépara sa mort de sa résurrection. La belle consolation pour ce mourant qu'un tel rendez-vous dans le royaume des ombres ! (Esaïe 14.9,10 ; 38.18)

Le mot paradis signifie parc. On le trouve dans ce sens littéral Ecclésiaste 2.5 ; Cantique 4.13. Les Septante désignent par ce mot le jardin d'Eden. (Genèse 2.8) Il est ainsi devenu synonyme du ciel, étant appliqué au séjour de l'homme sauvé.

Dans 2Corinthiens 12.4, Paul raconte qu'il "fut ravi dans le paradis, où il entendit des paroles ineffables, qu'il n'est pas permis à l'homme d'exprimer." Immédiatement avant, il avait rendu la même idée en disant qu'il "fut ravi jusqu'au troisième ciel." Comparer 2Corinthiens 12.4, 1re note.

Les deux termes sont donc synonymes.

Dans Apocalypse 2.7, le Seigneur promet "à celui qui vaincra de lui donner à manger de l'arbre de vie qui est dans le paradis de mon Dieu," nommant ainsi l'Eden retrouvé, le séjour de la félicité éternelle, qui est celui de Dieu même. Il nous parait inadmissible de donner au mot paradis un sens différent dans notre passage.

Une variante qui se lit dans B et dans quelques copies de l'Itala, au verset 42, porte : quand tu entreras dans ton règne. Si cette leçon que Westcott et Hort adoptent, présente le texte original, Jésus désigne du nom de paradis le royaume dans lequel il va entrer.

Le paradis n'est donc pas une division du hadès, car celui-ci n'appartient pas au royaume de Christ.
