Texte reçu : "Et aussitôt le père de l'enfant, s'écriant avec larmes, disait : Je crois, Seigneur, viens au secours de mon incrédulité."

Les mots soulignés sont inauthentiques.

- Les paroles de ce père affligé sont d'une profonde vérité psychologique et morale. Il sent le reproche que Jésus vient de lui adresser en lui renvoyant son : si tu peux, il en est confus, humilié ; il déclare qu'il croit, et pourtant il confesse son incrédulité ; paralysé par elle, il implore le secours du Sauveur, afin d'obtenir de lui la foi véritable.

C'est un combat douloureux qui se livre dans les profondeurs de son âme entre une foi trop faible et le doute qu'il ne peut surmonter. La violence de la lutte se trahit par ces termes : ayant crié, il disait.

C'est l'émotion profonde de cette âme qu'on a voulu exprimer par la variante qui se trouve dans un grand nombre de manuscrits et de versions : il disait avec larmes. Une telle prière ne pouvait pas ne pas être exaucée par Jésus.
