Pierre, selon son habitude et son caractère, prend la parole, mais il la prend au nom de tous.

- Le Christ en grec, comme le Messie en hébreu, signifie l'Oint, l'Oint de l'Eternel, par la plénitude de l'Esprit de Dieu. (Matthieu 1.16, note.)

Pierre voyait donc en Jésus-Christ l'accomplissement de toutes les promesses, la réalisation divine de l'ancienne alliance tout entière, le Libérateur promis à Israël et au monde.

- Mais il ne s'en tient pas là. Ce Messie est pour lui le Fils de Dieu, dans un sens unique, exclusif, (Matthieu 3.17) Celui qui est lui-même la parfaite révélation de Dieu. (Matthieu 11.27) Il est probable toutefois que la pleine signification de ce nom n'a été comprise par les apôtres qu'après la résurrection de Christ (Romains 1.4) et sous l'influence de l'Esprit de la Pentecôte.

- Pour bien marquer la portée de sa confession, Pierre ajoute au nom de Dieu une épithète au sens profond : Fils du Dieu vivant, l'opposant ainsi aux idoles sans vie qu'adorent les hommes (Actes 14.15 ; 17.29) et le présentant comme la source unique de la vie de l'univers, de la vie divine qui se manifestait en son Fils. (Jean 6.68)

"Dès l'origine la simplicité tout humaine et la pauvreté de la vie de Jésus, l'apparence faible du fils de l'homme avait contrebalancé l'impression des grands faits dont les apôtres étaient les témoins ; en dernier lieu les misères de leur vie de fugitifs avaient jeté un sombre voile sur les manifestations de la gloire de Jésus. La confession de Simon Pierre, dans ces circonstances, est un grand acte. On ne sait ce qu'on doit admirer le plus, de cet élan des disciples qui brisent le moule de la pensée juive, cassent le jugement des chefs religieux, s'élèvent au-dessus de l'opinion populaire, trouvent élevé et divin ce qui est humble et foulé aux pieds, parce que, aux yeux de l'esprit, cela est élevé et reste divin, ou de la personnalité de Jésus qui, malgré la puissance accablante des circonstances extérieures, obtient de si faibles disciples l'expression franche, pure, sublime de l'effet produit sur eux par l'ensemble de son activité." Keim.

- C'est dans notre évangile que cette confession de Pierre est la plus complète. D'après Marc, il dit : Tu es le Christ ; d'après Luc : Tu es le Christ de Dieu ; d'après Jean : (Jean 6.69) Tu es le Saint de Dieu ; mais ces titres impliquent celui de Fils de Dieu.

- Matthieu seul rapporte les paroles de Jésus à Pierre qui suivent.
