When the disciples heard it, they were exceedingly astonished, saying, "Who then can be saved?"

Unless those days had been shortened, no flesh would have been saved. But for the sake of the chosen ones, those days will be shortened.

What then? That which Israel seeks for, that he didn't obtain, but the chosen ones obtained it, and the rest were hardened.
Selon les uns (Meyer), ce serait un raisonnement à fortiori : Si tel est le danger pour les riches, qui ont tant de moyens de faire le bien, qu'en sera-t-il des pauvres ?
Selon d'autres (Weiss), les disciples ne penseraient qu'aux riches et se demanderaient : lequel d'entre eux peut être sauvé ?
Selon d'autres encore (de Wette), les disciples se disent que tous les hommes ont plus ou moins dans le cœur l'amour des richesses, qui donc échappera au danger ?
Il faut laisser à la question son sens indéterminé et général : si telles sont les conditions du salut, si le salut est chose si difficile, qui donc y aura part ?
