L'idée complète et vraie du mariage suppose avant tout que les deux sont "un cœur et une âme ;" tout ce qui tient à la chair, au sens restreint, n'est que le lien inférieur de cette union ; mais comme le mot chair, dans l'Ecriture, embrasse tout l'homme, son être entier, cette idée est bien exprimée par cette parole : une seule chair. Telle est l'intimité absolue et indissoluble du mariage, que Dieu a eue en vue dès l'origine de la création de l'homme, et que Jésus confirme de son autorité. (verset 6)
- En outre, cette déclaration est une condamnation de la polygamie, qui détruit de fond en comble la vraie notion du mariage.
