He said, "Who made you a prince and a judge over us? Do you plan to kill me, as you killed the Egyptian?" Moses was afraid, and said, "Surely this thing is known."

These were the divisions of the sons of Aaron. The sons of Aaron: Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.

But Nadab and Abihu died before their father, and had no children: therefore Eleazar and Ithamar executed the priest's office.

David with Zadok of the sons of Eleazar, and Ahimelech of the sons of Ithamar, divided them according to their ordering in their service.

There were more chief men found of the sons of Eleazar than of the sons of Ithamar; and they were divided like this: of the sons of Eleazar there were sixteen, heads of fathers' houses; and of the sons of Ithamar, according to their fathers' houses, eight.

Thus were they divided impartially by drawing lots; for there were princes of the sanctuary, and princes of God, both of the sons of Eleazar, and of the sons of Ithamar.

This was their ordering in their service, to come into the house of Yahweh according to the ordinance given to them by Aaron their father, as Yahweh, the God of Israel, had commanded him.

When he had come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching, and said, "By what authority do you do these things? Who gave you this authority?"

In that hour Jesus said to the multitudes, "Have you come out as against a robber with swords and clubs to seize me? I sat daily in the temple teaching, and you didn't arrest me.

They answered Jesus, "We don't know." Jesus said to them, "Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things."

He was teaching daily in the temple, but the chief priests and the scribes and the leading men among the people sought to destroy him.

They couldn't find what they might do, for all the people hung on to every word that he said.

But if we say, 'From men,' all the people will stone us, for they are persuaded that John was a prophet."

They answered that they didn't know where it was from.

Jesus said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things."

When they had stood them in the middle of them, they inquired, "By what power, or in what name, have you done this?"

But he who did his neighbor wrong pushed him away, saying, 'Who made you a ruler and a judge over us?
- La grande lutte dans le temple entre Jésus et ses adversaires commence. Le peuple en suit les péripéties avec intérêt. Sa faveur met momentanément Jésus à l'abri des entreprises de ses ennemis. Le but de ceux-ci, dans les questions qu'ils lui posent, est de l'amener à des affirmations qui lui aliéneront la sympathie de la foule et pourront aussi servir de motifs de condamnation.
- Les principaux sacrificateurs et les anciens faisaient partie du sanhédrin, le conseil souverain, qui avait la plus haute autorité en matière civile et religieuse. Ils viennent à Jésus comme députation officielle.
Leur double question est très précise : Quelle est ton autorité ? et de qui la tiens-tu ? Nous, semblent-ils dire, nous ne t'avons point donné d'autorité : es-tu donc un envoyé direct de Dieu ?
- Mais qu'entendent-ils par ces choses que Jésus faisait et qui les offusquent ? Etait-ce son enseignement, dans lequel ils viennent l'interrompre, ou toute son action à Jérusalem depuis son entrée royale dans cette ville, ou enfin et surtout la purification du temple ? (verset 12 et suivants)
Les interprètes se divisent sur ce point, mais il n'y a pas de doute que ce dernier acte d'autorité ne fût le principal grief des membres du sanhédrin. Ils espéraient que Jésus déclarerait qu'il avait le droit de faire la police dans le temple, parce qu'il s'y trouvait dans la maison de son Père, (Luc 2.49) étant le Fils de Dieu. Ils savaient quelle répugnance le peuple avait toujours montrée à accepter de Jésus une affirmation catégorique de sa divinité. (Jean 5.18 ; 8.59 ; 10.31,39)
En la lui arrachant à ce moment, ils pensaient ébranler, ruiner peut-être du coup sa popularité.
Beaucoup n’éprouvent aucune honte à mentir, voulant en fait masquer le péché qu’ils ont commis : ils n’ont aucun scrupule à dissimuler les erreurs, relatives à leurs propres pensées, leurs affections personnelles, leurs intentions, ou leurs mauvais souvenirs.
Dans ce texte, notre Seigneur refusa de répondre aux questions que lui posaient les sacrificateurs et les anciens. Il est bon de fuir les vaines et inutiles polémiques avec les pécheurs, opposés totalement à toute piété.
