Jesus said to them, "Can the friends of the bridegroom mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.

Take that which is yours, and go your way. It is my desire to give to this last just as much as to you.

Isn't it lawful for me to do what I want to with what I own? Or is your eye evil, because I am good?'

So the last will be first, and the first last. For many are called, but few are chosen."

But what do you think? A man had two sons, and he came to the first, and said, 'Son, go work today in my vineyard.'

"Therefore I tell you, the Kingdom of God will be taken away from you, and will be given to a nation bringing forth its fruit.

Ce mot, qui revient si fréquemment dans les évangiles, peut sans doute être considéré comme un hébraïsme et signifier : prendre la parole. Mais dans la plupart des cas il y a réellement une réponse de Jésus à des objections ou à des pensées non exprimées. (Matthieu 11.25)
La parabole qui va suivre est en effet une réponse aux mauvais desseins manifestés par les adversaires. (Matthieu 21.46, note.) Matthieu seul a conservé cette parabole. Marc et Luc terminent par la parabole des vignerons l'entretien qui précède avec les principaux du peuple ; puis ils passent à la question concernant le tribut, que Matthieu rapporte ci-dessous. (verset 15 et suivants)
La parabole du festin des noces. (Matthieu 22:1-14)
Ce qui peut être apporté par l’évangile, aux âmes en péril, est représenté dans ce texte par une fête donnée par un roi : on y trouve tout le faste oriental, à l'occasion du mariage du fils de ce grand personnage.Les pharisiens questionnent Jésus sur le tribut. (Matthieu 22:15-22)

Notre Dieu miséricordieux n'a pas seulement pourvu d’une simple nourriture, les âmes en perdition de ses créatures rebelles : Il leur donne un festin royal. Il y a suffisamment d'éléments dans le salut de Son Fils Jésus-Christ, pour contribuer à notre bien-être spirituel présent et à notre bonheur éternel.
Les premiers invités à ce festin étaient les Juifs. Quand les prophètes de l'Ancien Testament ne prédominaient plus, (ni d’ailleurs Jean-Baptiste, ni Jésus Lui-même, annonçant que le royaume de Dieu était proche), les apôtres et ceux qui présentaient l'évangile, furent envoyés, après la résurrection de Christ, pour annoncer que ce royaume était venu, et pour persuader les âmes d'accepter l'offre du salut.
Les pécheurs ne viennent pas à Christ, ni au salut qu’Il offre, pour une simple raison : non qu'ils ne peuvent pas s’approcher de Lui, mais parce qu'ils ne le veulent pas.
Ne pas reconnaître que Christ est la Lumière et ne pas accepter Son merveilleux salut, est le péché fatal de ce monde insouciant. De nombreuses personnes périssent à cause de leur simple légèreté quant à ce sujet, alors que d’autres ne montrent pas d'aversion directe : elles sont insouciantes quant au devenir de leur âme.
Les affaires et les occupations de ce monde empêchent beaucoup de personnes de s’approcher du Sauveur. Les paysans et les commerçants, par exemple, doivent s’impliquer complètement dans leurs affaires ; mais quels que soient nos intérêts ici-bas, nous devons veiller à ce que ces activités n’envahissent exagérément notre cœur, de peur qu’elles ne soient une barrière entre Christ et nous.
Ce texte décrit la ruine complète qui doit s’abattre sur l'église et la nation juives. La persécution des fidèles serviteurs de Christ montre l'importance de la culpabilité d'un peuple. L'offre de Jésus, Son salut pour les Païens, n'était pas attendus ; c'était une surprise semblable à celle d’un voyageur invité spontanément à un festin de noces royal.
Le but de l'évangile est de rassembler les âmes autour de Christ ; tous les enfants de Dieu sont disséminés, Jean 10:16;11:52.
Le cas des hypocrites est représenté dans ce texte, par l'invité qui n'avait pas revêtu un habit de noces. Ceci concerne tous ceux qui doivent se préparer à un examen rigoureux ; ceux qui ont « l'habit de noces » sont ceux qui ont « revêtu » le Seigneur Jésus, qui ont une attitude de chrétien, qui vivent par la foi en Christ, et pour qui Il représente tout.
La justice de Christ, et la sanctification de l'Esprit, sont toutes les deux nécessaires, de façon semblable. Aucun homme ne porte « l'habit de noces » par nature, ni ne peut le réaliser par lui-même. Le jour vient, où les hypocrites seront appelés à rendre compte de toutes leurs critiques présomptueuses sur la Parole, et leur usurpation des privilèges de l'évangile. Que ces personnes soient chassées de ce « festin spirituel ». Ceux qui marchent d'une manière indigne de Christ, perdent tout le bonheur auquel ils prétendent, de façon présomptueuse.
Notre Sauveur termine cette parabole par un enseignement : les hypocrites passent de la lumière de l'évangile, vers les ténèbres les plus complètes. Beaucoup sont appelés au festin des noces, c'est à dire au salut, mais peu sont revêtus de l'habit de noces, de la Justice de Christ, et de la sanctification de l'Esprit.
Examinons-nous donc, nous-mêmes, pour voir si nous possédons la foi, et cherchons à être approuvés par le Roi !
