On peut réunir en une les deux propositions interrogatives : "Ne réponds-tu rien à ce que ceux-ci déposent contre toi" (Tischendorf, B. Weiss.)

La ponctuation que nous avons adoptée est préférée par Tregelles, Westcott et Hort, Meyer. Ce dernier trouve avec raison qu'elle répond mieux à la passion avec laquelle le souverain sacrificateur interroge Jésus.

- Jésus se tait par un sentiment de dignité et par la conviction que toute défense serait inutile en présence d'un tel tribunal. Il y a donc dans ce silence une sévère accusation contre les accusateurs.

Sin., B, des majuscules et des versions omettent : reprenant la parole.

- Par ces termes solennels : Je t'adjure, et cela par le Dieu vivant qui doit punir le mensonge, (Hébreux 10.31) le souverain sacrificateur imposait à Jésus une sorte de serment.

Quelle est la question précise qu'il lui pose ? Non pas seulement : Es-tu le Christ, le Messie, car il n'est pas probable qu'une telle prétention eût paru digne de mort ; mais es-tu le Fils de Dieu ?

C'est en vain que plusieurs interprètes veulent nous faire considérer ces deux termes comme synonymes. Pour comprendre toute la portée que le souverain sacrificateur attachait à ce dernier titre, il faut se rappeler les termes dans lesquels les Juifs avaient précédemment articulé contre Jésus-Christ la même accusation : "il disait que Dieu était son propre Père, se faisant égal à Dieu ;" (Jean 5.18) "nous ne te lapidons point pour aucune bonne œuvre, mais pour un blasphème et parce que, n'étant qu'un homme, tu te fais Dieu.." (Jean 10.33)

La question de Caïphe est destinée à arracher à Jésus une semblable déclaration, qui permettra de l'accuser de blasphème, (verset 65) crime que la loi de Moïse punissait de mort. La réponse de Jésus aussi n'a toute sa signification que si l'on y voit une affirmation de sa divinité.
