Tenter Dieu, dans cette première application, c'était murmurer contre lui et ses dispensations, c'était aussi exiger de lui des manifestations extraordinaires de sa puissance et de sa bonté. Exode 17.2-7 ; comparez Psaumes 95.9 ; 1Corinthiens 10.9

Tel eût été le péché de Jésus, s'il avait consenti à s'exposer à un danger inutile, en comptant sur la protection de Dieu. (verset 6, note.) S'il avait eu pour cela un ordre positif de Dieu, ou s'il avait eu un but qui pût servir à la gloire de Dieu, il se serait exposé au danger sans tenter Dieu. C'est ainsi qu'il sut se soustraire aux embûches de ses ennemis, puis, quand "son heure fut venue," aller se livrer entre leurs mains. Jean 11.7-10 ; Matthieu 26.53,54
