Et ils partirent. Reprise du récit, en vue d'amener la mention des trois premiers jours de marche.

Marcha derant eux... On a expliqué ces mots dans ce sens que l'arche devança le peuple à une distance de trois jours. Mais une telle séparation serait sans exemple ; et comment expliquer les versets 35 et 36 qui disent le contraire ? Ce verset signifie donc simplement, que pendant trois jours consécutifs l'arche marcha à la tête du peuple, sans qu'il se présentât un lieu de campement convenable. Voir à 11.1.

Il semble, d'après versets 17 et 21 et 2.17, que l'arche devait se trouver avec les Kéhathites au milieu du cortège et non être en tête, et l'on a de nouveau conclu à une différence entre les documents. Mais nous trouvons ici la même manière de raconter que dans le cas des versets 17 et 21, qui apportaient une modification au chapitre 2, appartenant pourtant au même document. Nous voyons que, lors même que les Kéhathites marchaient au milieu du cortège portant les objets sacrés du sanctuaire, l'arche restait inséparable de la nuée qui dans les marches précédait le peuple, jusqu'au moment d'un campement où elle reprenait sa place au milieu du peuple (versets 35 et 36).

Pour leur chercher un lieu de repos : non pas en allant de droite et de gauche faire des perquisitions dans le désert, mais en avançant jusqu'à ce qu'il se trouvât une localité convenable pour y camper. Trois jours s'écoulèrent cette fois, non sans arrêt sans doute, mais sans qu'un seul endroit offrit un lieu de repos convenable.

Le fait de lever le camp et de l'établir nous donne un exemple du déroulement des tâches journalières que nous voulons entreprendre : tout ce parcours, tout notre travail doit être remis, dans la prière, entre les mains divines. Moïse adresse une prière à Dieu, quand l'arche commence à partir : « Lève-toi, Éternel ! Et que tes ennemis soient dispersés » !

Voilà le sort réservé aux ennemis de Dieu, à ceux qui Le haïssent : qu'il s'agisse d'adversaires directs ou sournois, opposés à la Parole de Dieu, à Sa vérité ou à Son peuple. La débâcle et la défaite des opposants à Dieu ne résultent en fait que de la volonté divine. Il faut remarquer également la deuxième prière faite par Moïse, quand l'arche s'est arrêtée : il appelait Dieu pour que ce dernier veille sur le peuple. Le bien-être et la joie du peuple d'Israël, peuple de Dieu, sont soumis à la présence permanente de ce Dernier, parmi les Siens.

Les Israélites n'étaient pas en sûreté à cause de leur grand nombre, mais grâce à la présence de Dieu, ce Dieu qui les accompagnait et qui restait parmi eux. Muni d'une telle protection, quel peuple pourrait se targuer d'être aussi joyeux que Toi, Israël ! Dieu continuera à te précéder, Se chargeant de te trouver un lieu pour te reposer. Ce Dieu a en effet promis de ne jamais laisser ce peuple, ni de l'abandonner, Il répond aux prières d'Israël !
