Cananéen. Ce nom, qui dérive d'une racine signifiant être bas, désigne tantôt tous les habitants du bas pays en général (Genèse 10.6, note), tantôt, comme ici, les habitants du bas pays, spécialement ceux de la côte de la mer et ceux de la plaine du Jourdain.
