N'agrée point leur oblation ! Le terme d'oblation ne peut désigner le parfum que les deux cent cinquante devaient offrir le lendemain. On a supposé que les Rubénites révoltés se disposaient à offrir une oblation pour prouver qu'ils se séparaient non de l'Eternel, mais de Moïse. N'est il pas plus naturel de prendre celte expression dans un sens en quelque sorte proverbial : Ne les traite pas comme des membres de ton alliance, dont tu agrées les offrandes ; ne les reçois pas comme Abel, mais comme Caïn (Psaumes 20.4) ?

Je ne leur ai pas pris... Moïse proteste de son désintéressement et de sa pureté dans l'usage qu'il a fait de ce pouvoir qu'on l'accuse d'avoir usurpé. Il a gouverné sans avoir prélevé sur eux le moindre impôt. C'est à Dieu qu'il en appelle devant tout le peuple avec une noble confiance (comparez 1Samuel 12.3).
