Quand Jacob était encore dans le ventre de sa mère, il a pris la place de son frère. Une fois devenu adulte, il a lutté contre Dieu.

Le prophète présente au peuple l'exemple de son ancêtre. Il fut et resta le Jacob naturellement rusé et pécheur, aussi longtemps qu'il voulut atteindre son but par des moyens frauduleux, conformément à l'attitude dans laquelle il était né et qui était un emblème de son caractère. Mais ensuite il devint un nouvel homme, lorsque, brisé par le sentiment de ses fautes, il remporta la victoire sur Dieu à force d'humiliation et de persévérance de foi (Genèse chapitre 32). Or, ses descendants ont à présent marché fidèlement sur les traces du premier Jacob ; ils ont multiplié leurs ruses et leurs tromperies (verset 1). Il serait temps pour eux de l'imiter enfin dans sa repentance et dans sa conversion à Dieu.

A l'âge de la force : dans son âge mûr, par opposition au moment de sa naissance.
