Canaan. C'est le nom que le prophète donne ici à Ephraïm, parce que, habitant le pays de ce nom, il s'est approprié le caractère de ses anciens habitants. Il est dans le pays et il en est. Nous caractérisons de même un homme en l'appelant un Juif, un Arabe. Les Cananéens, auxquels appartenaient aussi les Phéniciens, étaient un peuple d'habiles et rusés marchands.
