5 à 7 Les barbares.

Le ton de la première strophe a été celui de la menace et du triomphe ; le psalmiste revient ici à la triste situation des Israélites entourés de populations hostiles. Remarquer ici l'emploi du procédé littéraire, fréquent dans les psaumes des Maaloth, qui consiste à reprendre l'expression saillante d'un verset, pour en faire le point de départ du versa suivant :

Que je suis malheureux d'habiter parmi...
Mon âme en a assez d'habiter

Avec qui hait la paix,
Je suis homme de paix...

Delitzsch a même cherché dans cette forme littéraire l'explication du terme de Maaloth (montées). La pensée s'élève comme de degré en degré vers son but. Mais ce genre de composition ne se trouve pourtant pas dans tous les psaumes des Maaloth ; il ne saurait par conséquent leur avoir donné leur nom.

Mésec (Caucase) : les représentants des barbares du Nord.

Kédar (Arabie) désigne ceux du Sud. Ces deux noms ensemble rappellent, soit au propre, soit au figuré, les peuples au milieu desquels sont dispersés un grand nombre d'Israélites.

Il n'y a rien de plus cruel pour l'homme droit que d'être jeté parmi les méchants, desquels il voudrait être séparé à jamais. Observez bien, ici, le caractère d'un homme droit : il aspire vivre en paix avec tous les hommes. Suivons la démarche de David, en tant que préfiguration de Christ : dans les jours de détresse, crions vers le Seigneur et Il nous écoutera.

Poursuivons la paix et la sainteté, en nous efforçant de surmonter le mal par le bien !
